Reset Your Gut: It’s All About Consistency

At That Hippie Co., we believe in trusting your gut. Literally. Your gut health matters. The human cells within our bodies are vastly outnumbered by bacteria and other microbes, so in essence, we’re basically more bacteria than human. Our bodies require these bacteria and microbes to function properly and to support our immune system, as well as helping to process and absorb nutrients, and lower the risk of illnesses such as obesity and diabetes.

A number of chronic diseases and mental health conditions have been linked to an imbalance of bacteria within the gut. So, if your gut is feeling off, trust it and take the time to reset your gut health. If you have the occasional bloat, or you are a bit irregular – now might be the perfect time to get your gut back on track.

It’s time to get on top of your diet
Firstly, take a look at your diet. It’s been proven that a diet that’s high in animal protein, sugar and fat, and low in fibre can be linked to an increased risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, as well as certain cancers. When resetting your gut health, focus on consuming a more Mediterranean style diet. A diet that is rich in fruit, vegetables and whole grains with a lower intake of red meat and processed food and dairy increases the number of total bacteria in the gut and supports the beneficial bacteria our bodies need to function. Try to add high fibre foods to every meal and cut foods that contain added sugars. Add probiotics to your diet, to help to improve intestinal health and digestion by supporting and introducing beneficial microbes.

Limit treats
When addressing your gut health it’s important to limit your intake of sugar. By rule of thumb, try to stick to one glass of red wine or dark chocolate. Red wine supports beneficial bacteria, whilst other types of alcohol can harm it, and dark chocolate also has similar benefits.

Additionally, if you’re a smoker, it’s probably time to quit.

Get that body moving
It’s believed that exercise reduces stress hormones, and it’s these hormones that can have a harmful effect on your gut. It’s also thought that exercise can increase microbial diversity, which helps to support a healthy metabolism.

Beauty sleep is a must
If you don’t get enough sleep, the bacteria in your gut can be altered. Focus on trying to get your much needed 8 hours a night.

Can Apple Cider Vinegar help?
Apple Cider Vinegar has been shown to have antiviral and anti-yeast and -fungal benefits, which are all helpful in supporting microbiome and overall immune balance. ACV also has a natural antihistamine effect, which will lower the symptoms of allergies. Plus, ACV also provides relief from heartburn and indigestion.

You’ll find that your microbiome may change quickly with what you eat but there are no quick fixes for a healthy gut. Instead, make small, continual changes that will add up to resetting your gut health.
